OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION

Changing Money: The Australian Dollar is strong against the Egyptian Pound but can vary depending on the US dollar, so your spending money will go very far and you wont need to bring too much. If you bring Euro with you, the exchange rate will be even better. US dollars will also give good exchange rates. If bringing US notes, please make sure they are the new ones. Old ones are not accepted.

Money Belts: These can come in handy so that you keep your money and passport close to your body and under your clothes. However I do have to say that Egypt is a safe place and you are in the best of hands in terms of the experienced organisers.

What to bring: We will be arriving in Egypt in Winter. During the days, the temperature is rather warm, however at night and early in the morning it can get cold. Therefore both warm and cold weather clothing is required.

Suggested Requirements: Good walking shoes with grip, sandals for daily and one pair of dress shoes. Towel and toiletries. Hat, sunglasses and sunblock. A few warm jumpers. Jacket, Jeans, pants long skirts. Thick and thin socks. Loose comfortable clothes for activities such as body flow class in the desert. Mosquito repellent. Camera, film and travel diary. You may like to bring some dry food, just some things you like and cant get in Egypt (ask me if you are not sure). Head scarves are great for the desert winds.

Inoculations: Are not compulsory, but you can check with your doctor if you are not sure. An injection against hepatitis can be considered however I have been to Egypt a few times now and have never had any injections nor have I had problems while I was there.

Some things to keep in mind: This tour is something more than just an ordinary holiday. The spirit of the tour is to give yourself a chance to grow spiritually as well as to enjoy the beauty of this ancient land. The program will sometimes be quite full. With travelling and adjusting to people and practices that are new, it may occasionally feel a little intense. If you prepare your mind, you’ll be able to take these experiences as challenges, and besides having an awesome time, gather a little wisdom along the way. We’ll keep time for sharing, spiritual activities and helping each other. Be sure to let your guides (Tess & Omar) know your needs in this regard. We will do everything in our power to assist you on this journey. We want you to feel comfortable to come to us with any of your needs during this tour.

Cultural Hints and Etiquette

Temples and Religion: Religion is taken very seriously in the Middle East. It’s always important to show due respect to religious buildings, shrines, images and people at prayer. When entering a mosque, remove your shoes and leave them at the door (socks are ok). In general women must cover their heads before entering the mosque and in some mosques, a full length gown must be worn. There is no need to worry as we will discuss all these factors during our group meeting two weeks before we leave Sydney.

Dress: Middle Eastern people are very conservative about dress. Women are expected to dress modestly, with legs and shoulders covered preferably. Trousers, pants, jeans, long skirts are acceptable, but shorts and short skirts (unless on the cruise ship) are mostly offensive to many. Yolanda and I recall being stared at many times for our shoulders being exposed and our long hair freely flowing. Men should always wear a shirt in public,(unless on the cruise ship). Staying well groomed and dressing respectably vastly improves the impression you have on the local people.

Other Considerations: Kissing, and hugging is not often seen in public in Egypt, nor is holding hands (I know its tough but this is not a part of their culture to publicly display affection to their partners). Out of respect for the local culture and for the cultures of other participants (on the tour or on the cruise ship), please refrain from any ‘unnecessary’ over the top, affectionate behaviour in public (so please, no groping, grabbing or slobbing over one another if you are coming with your partner). Thanks for seeing the humorous side to this, I certainly can.

Use of Water: You will find that toilet facilities are generally reasonably clean and almost always have a tap and a hose or mug for washing oneself. Middle Eastern Culture use this system. Washing with water cleans much better than toilet paper, is more hygienic, and cools the lower chakras at the same time. If you chose to go to the toilet this way, you should wash your hands with soap afterwards, just the same as if you were using toilet paper. A note to make here is that its useful to carry around toilet wipes or tissues as some places may not have enough supplies.
